Should CUSAT Become an IIEST?
The prestigious Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is proposed to be converted to an IIEST (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology) . There are different opinions among People about this. The CUSAT community is also divided on the issue. While some argue that this is a welcome move, others strongly oppose it saying that this is a demotion from the status of the university and will in effect destroy the university. In this article we propose to examine both the views.
Emphasis: The opponents of the move argue that IIESt’s are much lower to IIT’s and have a only limited aim of producing high quality postgraduate engineers and this will destroy the current research departments. The supporters say that IIEST’s are institutes of national importance with thrust in Science research also.
Loss for Kerala students: the current opportunities for Keralites for higher education in an institution created by Kerala will be lost, argues the Save CUSAT forum created for saving the integrity of CUSAT. But the others argue that 50% reservation for Keralites is currently guaranteed.
A comparison of IIT’s and IIESt were given in Indian express dated 18/10/07. It contains many shortcomings of IIEst’s when compared to IIT’s. According to this article by Vinod Nedumudi, IIEst’s are inferior to IIT’s in many ways and allow transfer of employees across IIEST’s. The supporters question the authenticity of the report.
Save CUSAT forum points out that in all other places engineering colleges were converted to IIESTs , and universities spared ,but in Kerala, they are destroying a university that is wee functioning. The CUSAT syndicate even adopted a resolution to spare the University and convert the engineering colleges in CUSAT to an IIEST. The supporters argue that the engineering colleges converted are much larger than engineering colleges in Kerala and even larger than CUSAT.
A large meeting was held under the auspices of Save Cusat forum in which eminent persons like Dr.Job Kulavelil, Dr..Sebastian paul M.P, Sri.RVG Menon and
Dr. Aravindakshan explained the matter to the audience.

cusat is the best
according to my opinion cusat is best among all college in kerla olso in india.
because it make the student to work hard and learn proper concept which is not like in other college,so if u uwant to do hard work and leran proper concept and modern technology you should come in cusat. many student of cusat are frustrated frm cusat bcz they not want labor hard they r not able to under the sylabus.in single word i want to say u that cusat make student not his marks,not comprate cusat with other college bcz it intirely diff frm that. now i m studying in mechanical engg 6th sem so i m shairing my experience to u.
Intelligency level of students studying in cusat
according 2 me cusat is very good college but more than 50% of student fail every year that means intelligent student donot select cusat 4 admission.more than 80% of outside seats are filled by sitting dummy students for for other.than how can improve the college success status,if administration will not think hardly than nobody will save status of college.

if u have read the comment mentioned above given by a student of 5th semester , den my dear friend i wud say that he has intentionally portrayed our college well it is nothing like that we dont have placement over here ,infact it is one of the best colleges in kerala with a chance of being converted into an IIEST .
Idea star singer 2008
I was not watching idea starsinger-2008 till I hear ranji, shrath and deedi's re- entering. We can't compare an anchor like Renjini, her fluency in English and amazing presentation. Deedi is inevitable (not for judgment) for encouraging contestants with positive words. Sharath is Ok but he is making unwanted comments (Personally he makes jock with candidate it may hurt them).
We would like to request to Asianet reduce advertising and show one more performance (4 instead 3).
The singers are more talented than the previous ISS-2007.Especially Vivekanadan & Sonia.
We hope ISS-2008 will be one of the memorable event in our life.

i m studying here in 5th sem from cse branch…i hate it most..it would be better if u would go 2 ny other private ..
ny 1 …definetily it wil be better ..becoz 4rom here u will
get only tension..no knowledge..n forget about the placemenet…….realy trust me…
i m totaly in delema that why i left hbti kanpur ..4 this college..it is going 2 be 5th n till now my s1-s2 result has not come….n here pass % is 30 to 40 not more than that…so plz don’t come here…….

Reason for low pass rates in Cusat and comparin cet &cusat
Cusat is a college made for hardworking students . I t has the toughest syllabus and a strict evaluation. It is not like other universities who gives marks for anythin that the students write ,just for increasing the pass rate.Cet is a very good college. But both of them are equal in standard. Only workin students need to come here. And they re cmin in plenty.

let me clarify one point,i.e.,upgradation of cusat will only help upgrade it's facilities and all other customary functions.a kick start to this voyage has to be given sooner or later[some parts deleted:admin]
it's high time the think tank acts and i hope good sense prevails.

IIEST is new genus of National Institute which provide equal importance to Engineering, Science and Technology. It is infact going to be cross breed of IIT and IISc. Once Central assistance comes most of the present problems of CUSAT will be over. Stated doesnot fill teaching posts, no taking over of the posts sanctioned by UGC/AICTE. At present the culture of Guest faculty has destroyed the academic level of various state owned universities.
It will be beneficial to Kerala to have an IIEST with 50% reservation for Kerala.
My personal openion is that this 50% reservation will also harm the kerala students since they get admission without competing with others outside Kerala. Kerala students should come up through healthy academic competition then only they will be come good employable products.
Yes, if CUSAT become IIEST no cakewalk for teachers and students. They have to work hard.
CUSAT SHOULD BE CONVERTED TO IIEST
The following points may kindly be noted by the people who come up with wague arguements against IIEST proposal.
1.IITs.MIT etc are "institutes"...and no one will say that such "iinstitutes " are lower in status to an Universlty.
2.Presently,less than 25% seats are secured by Kerala students in CUSAT.In the proposed plan,50% of the seats are reserved for Keralites.To assure admission in an institution of national importance,is only a previlage for Kerala students.
3.The Ananthakrishnan committee report has clearly mentioned that all the existing departments will continue,including Science departments,M anagement,Hindi,Economics etc.So,such arguements are baseless.
4.The state Govt.is not selling CUSAT to any pvt.party.Its only a take over by the central Govt.The state Govt.assistance to CUSAT is about 25-30 crores per year only.We know that the facilities now available in CUSAT are mainly accurided through central Govt funding agencies like UGC,DST,CSIR etc.
5.The intital 550 plus crore for CUSAT is only for the infrastructural development.It is to raise the facilities in CUSAT.Remember that similar amount of fund will flow to CUSAT in the forthcoming years too.
6.The arguements against IIEST proposals are very narrow and baseless.It is with wested interset only.
7.Those who argues against IIEST have either havent gone through the full text of the Ananathakrishnana Ccommittee re[port,which is the guidline for convertion to IIEST.Oor,they are hiding the facts,and coming up with baseless arguments.
8.Its my humble request to go through the Anaanthakrishnana committee report.The copy of it is availbale in the CUSAT website also(CUSAT to IIEST link).
CUSAT TO IIEST
Really rediculous, a person talking about national importance donesnt know about the quality of education.
I am agree with the person has written above write up and urge everybody to think on..
I have graduated from CUSAT where meaning of eduaction in Engineering is still like a school. The lecturer those who gives lecture are not fully understood of topic and gives lecture. I was very much depressed while being a part of CUSAT but a glimpe came when i heard CUSAT upgradation to IIEST( A level of IIT)
I thought a good quality of educational team will be hired up. This is the university person takes guaranted for national importance have maximum failure rates in semester exams. This is the univeristy where semesters exams and results are uncertain along with passing of student even if they have written fully.
I dont know who is appealing save CUSAT from IIEST and on what basis, it may be to save all duffer teachers and wrost politics.
To decide all go through the results and the feedbak from stuents those study at centre.
I also request go into depth and never be narrow to make a place where politics will be started
IF ANY ONE WOULD GOING TO THINK SO THEN THERE IS NO SUCH IITs

being a student in CUSAT, i would say that it should be an IIEST, ,. n i hope all of them in CUSAT wud say the same, exept some political jerks, cos their strikes and similar moves wont work out if its an IIEST,.

At Present,only 35% Students are Keralites.In IIEST, 50% seats are assured for Keralites.That too at the expense of Central Government.CUSAT can not progress with 20-30 crores budges.Only Central Govt. can provide adequate funding for the development in Research & Infrastructure.
Yes, it is a centre of excellence with high quality research
We need more IITs and IIESTs in the country, not any money making private institutions. Education should be a service and has a leading role in development. Research in strategic areas should be promoted.

Even if you change the name of CUSAT as IIEST, nothing will happen in near future as any institution in kerala this also not an exception with so many bugs. There are more number of faculties who do not want to teach and do research.Other side there is red tapism of the administrative people irrespective of politics. For GOK it is only the matter of relief from finacial burden rather than making it an institution of international reputation, one of the best in top 100 universities.

THE CONVERSION OF CUSAT INTO IIEST IS VERY DECENT MOVE.AS IT IS SAID BY SOME PEOPLE THAT THE LEVEL OF STUDENTS OF CUSAT ARE NOT UPTO THE LEVEL OF THAT IITS.THIS IS TRUE TO SOME EXTENT BUT THE GAP IS NOT VERY WIDE.STUDENTS THAT HAVE TAKEN ADDMISSION TO THIS INSTITUTE HAD CHOOSEN THIS INSTITUTE WHEN THEIR WAS A MOVE TO CONVERT THIS COLLEGE INTO NEW IIT.THE INFRASTRUCTURE GAP WILL ALSO GET DIMINISHED WHEN THE FUNDS FROM UNION GOVERNMENT STARTS FLOWING.

BESU and CUSAT
Besu is very small compared to CUSAT.It is smaller than our TKM engineering college.So why not convert one engineering college and spare the university?

saying that BESU is smaller than TKM is not true. the writer may see BESY smaller than TKM, since he/she is standing near TKM looking the far away BESU. Donot get airfilled, it may burst.
All the institutions named for IIEST/IIT have long successful traditions of teaching and research in the area of Science and Technology. donot underestimate their achivements .
BESU is a Science &
BESU is a Science & Engineering University with lots of research in Engineering & Science.You can see lot of Publications from there in the area of Engineering & Science.When CUSAT is concerned , most of the departments are having Science research. It is very easy to publish papers in Science Journals when compared to technical journals such as IEEE. So CUSAT is having more papers in Science than technology.When compared to Acdemic conditions, BESU is having more academic culture than CUSAT. CUSATs academic culture completely controlled by Political parties. Now Save CUSAT forum ,opposing IIEST, having a very few members from left political parties who are not at all willing to work for the research . They are always utililising there time to do political activities in the Campus. If CUSAT becomes IIEST,they all need to work hard, that is only problem with these people. But they are all forgetting about the benefits they are suppose to get from MHRD. CUSAT should become an IIEST to have more research for the benefits of the society.

if anyone is the critic of cusat or does not want it to be upgraded than he is a critic of humanity and education.
This oppurtunity is given to rare colleges and CUSAT is one among them.
ONE should be proud of such opportunity and avail it rather than creating unncessary nuisance.
Why destroy CUSAT?
If the central government is so intent in making an IIEST,Why not they start a new one or why not upgrade ine of the existing Engineering colleges to this status. Why do they want to destroy CUSAT?
Also all the other institutions are small engineering colleges.CUSAT is much bigger so that we needs something more than IIEST.
IITs are branded
IITs are branded institutions which are established for a longtime now, where as the IIESTs are new concept and no one is quiete sure about their structure and functioning. The transition period will be chaotic. The service and remuneration patterns of the teachers and staff are uncertain. The admission and reservation criterea of the students are also uncertain. The NITs are the best example of these issues. Hence a clarity is required in these matters before converting these institutions to IIESTs
