Hearing the 'Unheard Voices' through physical theatre

The title may give a clue of what the event is. Well, Mallika Sarabhai, the dancer-activist was in the capital to stage "UNSUNI" a play based on 5 individauls whose lives she has outlined from Harsh Mander's(civil servant-turned author-turned activist) book 'Unheard Voices'.

She faced the usual hurdles when she started moving around the country with this play, towards the end of last year. Bitter truths, should not be brought to the forefront, that is what the establishment thinks. What are carpets for? But sweeping under the carpet is not something she relies on, so we got to see an energetic, hard-hitting musical which is enough to stir you out of complacency. The street child, a displaced tribal, a human scavenger, a leper couple trying to give their son a life sans stigma, and a victim of communal riots are the people who tell you their stories through monologues.

Mallika Sarabhai was literally on a whirlwind tour of 14 districts in the state in seven days staging the play before college students with the intention of getting people to volunteer to help in any which way to contribute to the betterment of the 'lesser mortals.'

The songs which were her lyrics set to popular Hindi film songs interspersed the five monologues and that was a relief.

However 'voluntarism' is the need of the hour and theatre is one way to energise a people that is complacent.
